Introduction
Saving time and money while making better business decisions is more
important to corporations now than ever before. Electronic mail is a
fast, inexpensive, and efficient method for sending and receiving all
types of information. Electronic mail is a utility, widely used by most
corporations to provide a cohesive infrastructure for knowledge workers
of all types to conduct daily business. In multi-vendor environments,
organizations need to communicate across a variety of existing systems
and applications easily and reliably. The HP Electronic Messaging
Solution interoperates with a variety of electronic mail systems and
allows information to be exchanged transparently between users and
applications throughout an enterprise. See Figure 1 below.
Figure 1 (L2CC24.gal)
The HP Electronic Messaging Solution provides communications from:
Person-to-person.
Employees can transfer, access, and manipulate simple messages;
multimedia compound documents; complex spreadsheets; and more, in the
desired formats.
Person-to-application.
Sales representatives can request the latest competitive data over the
electronic mail system, in order to update a critical hotline for sales
information.
Application-to-person.
An order processing system that detects an exception can mail a report
to a distribution list for action.
Application-to-application.
Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) applications can use the messaging
infrastructure to submit and process orders within and between
companies.
Two major differences separate the HP Electronic Messaging Solution
from all other electronic mail. First, the HP Electronic Messaging
Solution is a complete architecture for implementing large mission-
critical messaging networks. Secondly, it provides the most cost-
effective management of large messaging networks.
Benefits
HP Electronic Messaging provides a complete messaging infrastructure
that links to existing electronic-messaging systems. The HP Electronic
Messaging Solution is comprehensive, providing a message store;
interfaces; transport; directory; administration services; security;
mail-enabled applications; gateways; convertors; support; consulting;
and system integration. The architecture is based on UNIX and X.400
standards so that the solution can be implemented without risk of being
outpaced by rapidly changing technology. With its open architecture,
the solution can interoperate with a variety of system types, from PC
LAN to mini/mainframes.
The HP Electronic Messaging Solution is cost-effective and offers the
lowest overall cost of ownership per user in the industry. The cost of
installing and operating an electronic messaging system is far greater
than the original purchase price. HP has integrated and tested the HP
Electronic Messaging Solution completely. HP provides installation
scripts to minimize start-up time and offers solution consulting for
configuration, customization, pilot project implementation, and
solution deployment. For operational efficiency and lowered costs, HP
OpenMail includes a full suite of management tools for remote,
centralized administration, remote task automation, on-line backup,
audit trail and statistics, error reporting, and troubleshooting.
Also, the HP 9000 and X.400 transport are manageable by HP OpenView
Network Node Manager.
